Charlotte Ultimate Dog Pantry

What should be in your puppy pantry!

Dog owners need to get the right dog food to keep their pets healthy, happy and full of energy. Different dogs need different types of food; the kind needed can vary based on the dog’s stage of life, general health and special needs.

When you’re wondering what the healthiest dog food,  the best dog food is, you probably mean, which brand of dry (kibble) or canned?

What’s in your Dog Pantry

The food you give your dog plays a critical role in his well-being, both on a daily basis and long-term. He needs a diet with the right nutrients to keep him active, happy, and healthy. And make no mistake: Not all dog foods are created equal.

Transparency about ingredients, ingredient sources, and processing methods beyond the minimum of what is legally required is generally difficult to come by in the pet food industry. Many different brands use the same ingredient providers and manufacture products at the same processing facilities.

While pet goods attempt to differentiate themselves with various marketing claims about their ingredients, there is considerable scientific debate about the importance that should be assigned to specific ingredients compared to the overall nutritional profile of a pet food. We know a lot more about what contributes to a healthy diet and which ingredients to seek or avoid with human food compared to pet food.

Consider food allergy

Food allergy is a very common component of itchy skin in dogs. Chicken, beef, lamb, corn, soy, wheat, egg, and dairy products are common ingredients which induce these allergies, but, whether they are raw or cooked, the immune system looks at them the same. The key to choosing a food for skin problems is to pick one that does not include any of these ingredients, is preserved with vitamins, and preferably is supplemented with fatty acids (fish oils). Most large food companies now have their own versions of these foods. They are usually sold as prescription foods but are not significantly more expensive than over-the-counter foods of equivalent quality.
